Africa's prosperity rests on building citizen trust in governments and public institutions

Kigali 28 April (ECA and OGP)-In collaboration with Open Government Partnership this week the UN Economic Commission for Africa will organize a Roundtable Dialogue to discuss how anti-corruption and open government reforms in Africa could transform the civil service and build trust between governments and their citizens.

The high-level Roundtable Dialogue will be convened under the theme: Building citizen trust through anti-corruption and open government reforms, on Sunday 29 April, on the margins of the Kigali 2018 Ibrahim Governance Weekend.

ECA’s Vera Songwe calls for stronger African voice on global arena

Addis Ababa, 14 April 2018 (ECA) – Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, on Saturday highlighted the importance of groupings such as T20 Africa in bringing Africa’s case to the global stage, particularly to the G20.

In a keynote address at the beginning of T20 Africa Standing Group’s annual meeting, Ms. Songwe said Africa needs to have its voice heard in meetings of groupings such as the G20 that make decisions that have a direct impact on sustainable development on the continent.

Ethiopia and ECA sign agreement to kick-start Africa Hall renovations

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 13, 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa and Ethiopia on Friday signed an agreement marking the beginning of renovations to modernize the iconic Africa Hall, the birthplace of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which is now the African Union.

ECA Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, and Ethiopia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hirut Zemene Kasa, signed the agreement to pave way for the renovations which will cost $57 million resulting in the modernization of the hall’s facilities to international standards.

ECA to partner with private sector in effort to spur growth in Africa, says Songwe

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 13, 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa will soon be partnering with the private sector to ensure the sector plays a role in delivering growth and prosperity in Africa.

In remarks during a meeting with the Fifth Committee, a committee of the United Nations General Assembly responsible for administrative and budgetary matters that is currently in Addis Ababa, ECA Executive Secretary Vera Songwe said the private sector has a critical role to play as the engine of economic growth in Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines promotes regional integration, says Songwe

Addis Ababa, 11 April 2018 (ECA) - Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, recently met with Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam, and praised the airline for championing regional integration through its flights to over 50 destinations on the continent.

“Ethiopian Airlines flies to over 58 destinations in Africa connecting the continent, moving people and goods, and thus making the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) possible,” said Ms. Songwe after a tour of the Ethiopian Aviation facilities in Addis Ababa on 29 March.
