Launch of the #HonestService Public Service Delivery Campaign.

Nouakchott, 28 June 2018 (ECA) - The UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) invites all media attending the AU Summit to the launch of a public service delivery campaign tagged #HonestService.

This campaign will be launched with the participation of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, ECA’s Executive Secretary Vera Songwe, as well as representatives of African Member States.

Synergies between the AfCFTA and Tripartite FTA will benefit Africa’s traders and consumers, says ECA Chief

Africa needs to increase access to internet if digital trade is to be meaningful, says Vera Songwe

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 31, 2018 (ECA) – A two-day conference on “Digital Trade in Africa: Implications for Inclusion and Human Rights”, opened in Addis Ababa Thursday, with a high level panel discussion on the importance of digital technologies in the advancement of trade and Africa’s development.

The panelists at the opening session were Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary, Economic Commissioner for Africa; UNCTAD’s Secretary-General, Mukhisa Kituyi; former ECA Executive Secretary, Carlos Lopes; and Amani Abou-Zeid, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy.

Songwe and Kituyi launch UNCTAD’s 2018 Economic Development in Africa Report

Addis Ababa, 31 May 2018 (ECA) – The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) flagship report, the Economic Development in Africa Report 2018, was launched in Addis Ababa Thursday.

Subtitled ‘Migration and Structural Transformation in Africa’, the report highlights that contrary to some perceptions, most migration in Africa today is taking place within the continent.

Vera Songwe: ’Access to clean and safe water is a human right’

Addis Ababa, 7 May 2018 (ECA) - In her remarks during the opening of Africa Water Week in Addis Ababa on 7 May 2018, Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) deplored the extent to which chemical pollution and poor management of water resources are affecting lives across the continent.

“Today over 300 million people lack access to clean and safe water and many women and children spend hours field-searching for water and are denied the opportunity to break out of extreme poverty,” said Ms. Songwe.
