Green economy under the spotlight in high level policy event during CoM 2018

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 10, 2018 (ECA) – A high-level policy event on the inclusive green economy and structural transformation in Africa will be held Sunday at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa starting at 2pm.

Linus Mofor, a Senior Environmental Affairs Officer in the ECA’s African Climate Policy Centre that is in the Special Initiatives Division, says the event will be held under the theme; leveraging domestic resources to green Africa’s infrastructure for resilient economies.

Voluntary national reviews

Voluntary national reviews (VNRs) facilitate the sharing of experiences, successes, challenges and lessons learned; promote the strengthening of policies and institutional frameworks; and help in marshalling multi-stakeholder support and partnerships to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs. In line with the primacy of member States in implementing the SDGs, annual VNRs are vital and integral tools that inform the work of the HLPF during its sessions under the auspices of ECOSOC.

Invest in climate information services to handle climate change shocks, ECA’s Murombedzi urges Africa

Addis Ababa, March 29, 2018 (ECA) - Experts in climate information services (CIS) and other related fields from across the continent on Tuesday unanimously agreed CIS has socio-economic benefits (SEB) that are helpful for disaster risk reduction (DRR), in particular supporting Africa’s response to climate change.

The experts attending a two-day validation workshop on analyzing and validating the socio-economic benefits of CIS for disaster reduction, agreed research has proven that climate information services have socio-economic benefits helpful for disaster risk reduction.

Fourth session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development

Background

  • Across the globe, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which forms the global development framework around 17 Sustainable Development Goals, began in January 2016. In Africa, the 2030 Agenda is being implemented concurrently and in an integrated manner with the First 10-year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063, a 50-year strategic framework for socioeconomic transformation in Africa, which is aimed at accelerating the implementation initiatives for growth and sustainable development.

African countries discuss efforts to reduce national emissions & adapting to impacts of climate change

Addis Ababa, 28 March 2018 (ECA) – A two-day consultative workshop on Enhancing Readiness for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) Implementation in Africa ended Tuesday in Addis Ababa with participants agreeing on the need for the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) and its partners to continue supporting member States in their efforts to combat climate change.

The second African Climate Talks conclude with calls for homegrown solutions

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 23 March 2018 (ECA) - Africa should focus more on building internal solutions to its problems rather than depend on international partners to solve its challenges.

This was the dominant message at the end of the two-day meeting on the Talanoa Dialogue: African Climate Talks II (ACT!-II) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Participants at the talks on the theme; “Market policy versus market mechanisms in the implementation of the Paris Agreement”, called for African initiatives to address the continent’s climate problems.
