Central Africa: industry-schools linkages, training centers and economic zones - vital for economic diversification

Yaounde, 5 August, 2020 (CEA) - Inadequate skills development and low productivity are holding down the competitive and economic diversification potential of Central African countries. However, if they draw inspiration from the experiences of Ethiopia, Japan and South Africa, among others, these countries can retool their human resources to become more developed, prosperous and resilient to external shocks.

ECA’s Office for Central Africa meets performance objectives for Q2 of 2020

Yaounde, 27 July 2020 (ECA) – From successfully supporting member States in the formulation of national AfCFTA strategies and achieving consensus on a unique subregional diversification masterplan, through responding to the double jeopardy caused by COVID-19 on health and the economy, the Central Africa Office of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), met its performance objectives for the second quarter (April to June) of 2020.

This is the second and final webinar in a two-part series prior to 36th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Senior Officials and Experts (ICE) for Central Africa to be organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) from 05 to 09 October 2020 in Yaounde, Cameroon.  While the ICE’s theme is: “Skills for economic diversification in Central Africa,” this online event will focus on “leveraging experiences from successful comparators and building partnerships.”

Free roaming within CEMAC by Jan 2021 is way to go!!!

Yaounde, 01 July, 2020 (ECA) – Member States of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) have everything to gain in respecting the January 2021 deadline to finally put an end to surcharges on mobile roaming within the zone in order to boost the sub-region’s economic recovery efforts in a post-COVID-19 dispensation, posits the Sub-regional Office for Central Africa of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Time for Cameroon to scale-up local manufacturing in readiness for AfCFTA

Yaounde, 26 June, 2020 (ECA) – Cameroon’s Minister of Trade – Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana concurred with officials of the Subregional Office for Central Africa of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Thursday evening, that COVID-19 has offered countries of the sub-region the opportunity to re-appropriate the structure of their economies by first ramping up local manufacturing of domestically consumed products and taking advantage of the forthcoming African common market to sell to wider targets.
