Addis Ababa, October 14, 2019 - In support of the efforts to ratify the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement and build the capacity of the Comoros to benefit from the opportunities offered by a market of 1.2 billion people, a national sensitization workshop will be held on 18 and 19 October in Moroni.
The workshop will seek to identify the opportunities, risks and constraints arising from the implementation of the AfCFTA in the Union of the Comoros, and will cover the following topics:
- Opportunities for value addition and expansion of business opportunities in priority sectors, including the blue economy, ICTs and financial services
- Opportunities to diversify the export of goods and services to the continental market
- Inclusion and empowerment of women and youth
This meeting will also seek to identify the comparative and competitive advantages of the Comorian economy, as well as the potential risks and losses associated with the AfCFTA, which will serve as a basis for the development of a strategic action plan and recommendations to facilitate the participation of the Union of Comoros in the AfCFTA.
The workshop is part of the exploratory missions undertaken by ECA, through the African Trade Policy Center (ATPC) in five African Small Island Developing States (SIDS): Cabo Verde, the Union of Comoros, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe and Seychelles. The purpose of these exploratory missions is to foster a better understanding of the state of integration of SIDS into the continental economy, while identifying policy options to enhance their participation in the AfCFTA.
