The course in Brief
In order to provide interested stakeholders from government, business, civil society and academia with a better understanding of how trade can serve as an instrument of accelerated industrialization and structural transformation in Africa, the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) offered an online course on Industrialization through Trade from 17 September to 14 October 2018.
At the end of the course, participants were able to:
- Discuss the recent main developments in the world economy and how they affect the African continent;
- Identify the main economic and social developments in Africa;
- Describe how trade can serve as an instrument of accelerated industrialization and structural transformation in Africa;
- Identify the challenges and opportunities for Africa to industrialize through trade in the context of rapidly changing regional and global economic environments;
- Better understand the effects of key trade agreements on Africa’s industrialization;
- Discuss the importance to properly sequence trade agreements in order to best support Africa’s industrialization efforts; and
- Discuss how African countries could address their major development challenges through mobilizing resources for structural transformation.
This self-paced course was moderated asynchronously on a weekly basis and participants were required to participate in the weekly on-line discussions. In addition, each module had interactive lessons that provided the core content around the topic for that module. The lessons were designed in a way that learners were also able to self-assess their understanding through built-in quizzes. Additional resources such as bibliographies, web links and optional readings were provided for participants who wished to deepen their knowledge of the course topic.
The course was delivered thru IDEP eLearning platform. Participants were asked their overall appreciation of the platform and the overall trend is from good (51.43%) to very good (31.43%). 28 certificates were awarded to participants from 15 countries of Africa.
The initiative ended successfully and participants felt satisfied with the relevance of the topic and the modules, with the competence of resource persons and methodology of delivery, as well with training materials and modules. It is worth stressing that most participants thanked IDEP for having offered them the opportunity to learn more about the challenges of how trade can serve as an instrument of accelerated industrialization and structural transformation in African countries.
They recommended that IDEP continue to organize such courses for the benefit of African officials.
