Nouakchott studies use of IPRT tool to step up SDGs & Agenda 2063 implementation

Nouakchott, October 7, 2020 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa launched on Wednesday 7 October a two-day workshop on the use of the Integrated Planning and Reporting Toolkit (IPRT) in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Productive Sectors of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

This training workshop is taking place with the participation of some 30 officials from 24 Mauritanian ministries and institutions. "I am convinced that your relevant contributions, the high and diversified level of representation, as well as the quality of the presentations and discussions you will be having during this workshop will enable the formulation of useful recommendations and proposals to enrich the Accelerated Regional Growth Strategy and Shared Prosperity (SCAPP) implementation report, ”said Ely Oudeika, Deputy Director General for Development Policies and Strategies at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Productive Sectors to the participants.

The IPRT training workshop aims to provide Mauritanian decision-makers with a practical interface that will facilitate the implementation and monitoring of Mauritania’s international commitments towards achieving sustainable development.

“The IPRT toolkit has been designed and monitored by a seasoned team of economists, statisticians and IT specialists. It is also part of a larger project, jointly led by ECA, other United Nations agencies and development partners to inspire a new generation of national development plans in Africa,” said Khaled Hussein, Director ai of the ECA Office in North Africa of the meeting.

According to Ahmed Al-Awah, head of the IT Strategic Advisory Unit at ECA, “The IPRT toolkit enables countries to integrate, on the one hand, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2063 and other international commitments and, on the other hand, their national development plans. It allows the monitoring of their implementation on three levels (objectives, targets and indicators) through a single platform and includes modules that facilitate the production of situation reports in accordance with national needs”.

In view of the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on the implementation of development objectives across the African region, the IPRT toolkit aims to assess the current progress towards the implementation of development goals and help identify priority actions to make up for delays.

So far, more than 18 African countries have benefited from ECA IPRT trainings, including Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, DRC, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Seychelles, Tunisia and Uganda. Other similar trainings are scheduled to take place in 2021 in a number of other countries including Algeria, Libya and Sudan.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015 is based on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) covering 169 targets and 232 indicators which touch upon a diversity of areas including economic and social development and environmental protection.

Agenda 2063 was launched by the African Union in 2013, and defines several stages to achieve an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force in the internationalarena.
