Addis-Ababa, 25 March 2016 (ECA) – The African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) will hold a ministerial round-table on the theme “Addressing the Impact of Drought, Floods and Declining Commodity Prices in Africa”, Sunday 3 April in Addis Ababa as part of the Africa Development Week 2016.
According to the organizers, ministers and experts will examine economic and financial management challenges arising in Africa. Discussions will focus mainly on agricultural production as this sector is currently affected by declining commodity prices and an increase in floods and droughts across the continent.
Participants will also evaluate the integration of the Agenda 2063 First Ten Year Implementation Plan (FTYIP) - Africa’s blueprint for economic transformation - in national strategic frameworks and action plans.
Agriculture, which is a key component of Africa’s economy, relies heavily (90%) on rain-fed production. This sector is now suffering from a widespread, prolonged drought, declining primary goods prices and rising US interests rates. These trends have resulted in a negative impact on the growth of African countries, their financial balances and debt ratios. Populations also face higher unemployment, poverty and inequalities.
