New York, 21 September 2016 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa and its partners, the African Development Bank, African Union Commission and the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Bureau for Africa havelaunched the Millennium Development Goals to Agenda 2030/Sustainable Development Goals Transition Report 2016.
The launch took place during a high level side event at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly. The event was on “Implementing Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030 in an integrated and coherent manner” and was organized by the AUC in collaboration with NEPAD’s Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the ECA, AfDB and UNDP.
The event gathered participants ranging from African Heads of State and Government to other high-raking officials, the African Group in New York, heads of Pan African organizations, heads of international organizations as well as development partners and stakeholders.
This report, which is the last in a series of MDG reports, takes stock of Africa’s performance on the MDGs to date and reflects on the challenges and opportunities associated with the transition to the new global and continental development Agendas adopted in 2015, that is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063, Africa’s roadmap for development.
The key message is that African countries have already started the hard work of implementing Agenda 2063 and 2030.
However, success will require among others, strengthened capacities for integration of both agendas in national planning frameworks, effective institutional coordination and strong statistical systems to support evidenced based policymaking and follow-up.
