What: The launch of the book “She Stands For Peace: 20 Years, 20 Journeys”

Background: The book launch in the presence of the AUC Deputy Chairperson and the UN Secretary-General along with other high-level dignitaries, is part of the activities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security, which is also timely with the launch of activities on the AU Theme of the year on “Silencing the Guns: Creating conducive conditions for Africa’s development”.
The commemorative book was jointly produced by the AUC and UN Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and made possible by the generous support of the Government of the Kingdom of Norway. It captures the stories of outstanding African women and women-led organisations who have worked tirelessly towards building lasting peace in the continent. There will be a photo exhibition and an opportunity to interact with and listen to the stories of some of these brave women.

The African Union – United Nations collaboration on the production of this book reflects a greater partnership between the two organizations, marked by the signing of the UN-AU Joint Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Security in April 2017, by H.E. Moussa Faki Mahammat, AU Commission Chairperson and H.E. Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General.
In the year 2000, the UN Security Council adopted its landmark Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security. The Resolution observed that conflict affects women differently and underscored the importance for peace processes to be inclusive and address the needs, views and ensure the participation of women in order to achieve positive outcomes and a lasting peace dividend.
