IDEP and the University of Johannesburg strengthen their partnership for training and research

Dakar 20 June 2018 - A delegation from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) paid a three-day working visit to the African Institute for Economic Development and Planningn in Dakar. During this visit, which ended on June 20, discussions focused on topics related to training and research in Africa.

The delegation is made up of colleagues from the University of Johannesburg, Pr. Daneel Van Lill, Dean of the Faculty of Management, Pr. Samantha Ashman, Director of the Joint Master Program IDEP-UJ and Oscar Van Heerden, Senior Director, Internalisation .

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a strategic partner of IDEP, with whom the Institute has organized short courses on economic policy management, development planning, international trade negotiations and industrialization, etc. A successful partnership led to the launch of a joint Master's program in Industrial Policy in 2016. This Master Program (MPHIL) is designed to help fill an important gap in the kind of specialised human resource capacity that would enable African governments in their individual and collective efforts to design and implement the robust industrial policies and strategies that could set them on the path of sustained development and structural transformation. Already 3 cohorts since the launch of this Master have benefited from the support of IDEP.

This visit was an opportunity to discuss the progress of the master's program, results obtained and feedback. At the opening ceremony of the course on "Industrial Policy in Africa", on June 18, they presented to the participants the University of Johannesburg and more specifically the University's Business School of Economics and at the the joint master program IDEP-UJ. Professor Van Lill emphasized the richness of sharing and exchanging experiences.

A meeting with the IDEP Training Division team provided an opportunity to review the major advances of the Master's program and to reflect on new research projects that IDEP and UJ can collaborate on. The meeting explored other areas of partnership, including research, exchange of technical expertise, joint seminars and a common e-learning program. This stay further consolidated the partnership between the two institutions.
