Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 23 March 2016 (ECA) – More than sixty geological experts meet in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to discuss the Africa Minerals Geoscience Initiative (AMGI), a strategy to assist African Union (AU) member States build their wealth of information on geological minerals in Africa.
Successful implemetation of the AMGI will provide a cohesive, continent-wide database of mineral geological information available to all key stakeholders working in the minerals sector. More specifically, the expected outcomes of this three-day event include :
- Broad consensus on the Pan-African Coordination mechanism for the implementation of the GMIS
- Agreement on an implementation plan and Roadmap for the AMGI project
- Formalization of the Organisation of African Geological Surveys as a formal voice for African Geologist to the African Union
- Stronger collaborative relationship between GMIS and other international geological initiatives.
The high-level roundtable will also include an in-depth discussion on the Geological and Mineral Information System (GMIS) Strategy, currently being developed by the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC). The primary objective of the GMIS Strategy is to strengthen the production, management and dissemination of geological and mineral information, particularly as it relates to the roll out of the African Mining Vision (AMV) across the continent, and its domestication at the national level in the form of various Country Mining Visions (CMV).
In his opening statement, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals of Tanzania, highlighted the significance of the AMGI in realizing the tenets of the AMV. “We are here to set out areas of collaboration between existing geological initiatives compliant with the Africa Mining Vision," he said, "This is our opportunity to see to it that the rich endowments of our natural resources, particularly mineral resources, bring wealth to the African people.”
