The Sustainable Development in Africa Report assesses progress on the realization of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Each year, the themes of the report are aligned with the forthcoming High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The theme for the 2018 forum is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies”. As such, the report for this year focuses on:

  • Goal 6 – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all;
  • Goal 7 – Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all;
  • Goal 11 – Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable;
  • Goal 12 – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns;
  • Goal 15 – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss; and
  • A thematic area contributing to Goal 17 – Science, Technology and Innovation for development.

At this expert group meeting, the authors of the report will seek input from African member states regarding the report’s themes, data, and analysis. There will be country presentations on experiences of transitioning to the new Agendas 2063/2030, with examination of lessons learnt and further challenges. The authors of the report will present the key issues that arise from each chapter, with insights to be gathered from attending experts. The report will be adopted by the group, after agreeing on necessary changes.
