Nouakchott, 27 February (ECA): The Economic Commission for Africa initiated today a technical assistance mission in support to the Mauritanian national statistics office (Office National de la Statistique, ONS). The mission will last until 10 March 2017.
This project aims to establish a partnership with Mauritania to better collect and process economic, social and environmental data. The ECA team will also support the migration of Mauritania’s System of National Accounts (SNA) towards a new base year, SNA 2008, in collaboration with the Moroccan Institute of Statistics, the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
Participants will revise concepts, methodologies and data collection tools used in Mauritania, to improve the data and statistics gathered on fields such as the informal sector, employment, foreign trade or socio-economic indicators. This project is scheduled to last until 2018.
Key expected results will include improving the GDP calculation method as well as the monitoring of Mauritania’s progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063.
This mission is taking place within the framework of a three party technical cooperation involving the ECA, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Kingdom of Morocco, and aims to promote technical cooperation between ECA and the sub-region. “In addition to strengthening the capacity of countries to produce reliable statistical data, we aim to promote the development of a South-South expert network to strengthen North African cooperation as well as the sharing of experiences and good practices in various statistical fields”, said Mr Omar Abdourahman, interim director at the ECA office in North Africa.
