IDEP, as part of its capacity building activities, organized a course on «Macroeconomic Modelling» from 7 to 18 May 2018 in Dakar, Senegal. This course is intended for middle and senior managers in charge of economic policy analysis and planning issues in African Member States. Some 22 anglophone and francophone participants took part in the bilingual training session. They come from 21 countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone , Sudan, Swaziland, Chad, Uganda. The Arab Maghreb Union was also represented.
Participants had the opportunity to understand how macroeconomic models are constructed as well as the effects of shocks on different sectors of the economy. This was made possible thanks to the expertise of the resource persons who facilitated the modules of courses related to macroeconomic modeling as well as modeling in computable general equilibrium.
The closing ceremony of the course was chaired by Mr. Mouhamadou Bamba Diop, Director at the Directorate General of Planning, at the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Planning of Senegal. Mr. Diop emphasized the importance of mastering economic modeling tools to guide policy decisions. "Modelling helps structure debate and be objective in decisions," he said. In addition, he recalled the role played by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), which assists member states in aligning national development plans with international development agendas such as the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations United Nations and the 2063 Agenda of the African Union. He also welcomed the representativeness of the different sub-regions of Africa in this training program. The representative of IDEP Director Benoît Diouf recalled the role of planning as a lever for economic development. He also said that to be successful in planning, a careful diagnosis of the ills of the economy was crucial to make good forecasts for the future.
The Course Director, Pr. Adeola Adenikinju, in addition to his predecessors, urged participants to practice constantly to improve their mastery of modeling tools. He also congratulated the participants for the enthusiasm and dynamism they showed throughout the training program.
The participants thanked IDEP, the teaching team and the State of Senegal for organizing this training. They suggested extending the course in order to devote more time to the practice of modeling techniques. At the closing ceremony, they all received certificates of competence testifying to their very good performance.
