Maseru, Lesotho, 14 March 2016 (ECA) – The African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC), with the support of UNDP Lesotho, will host a three-day communications workshop centering around the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) Tuesday 15 March to Thursday 17 March 2016 at the AVANI Hotel (Hilton Road) in Maseru, Lesotho.
The AMDC has been proud to work with the UNDP in supporting the Lesotho government in its important work in developing a revised Minerals and Mining Policy aligned to the Africa Mining Vision and the country’s Vision 2020 and NSDP 2012/13-2016/17. As such, the Lesotho workshop is the first of a number of awareness-raising in-country workshops aimed at informing communication practitioners about the AMV process in their respective countries.
The effective adoption of a new policy in a country in the form of various Country Mining Visions (CMV) should not – and must not – be restricted to politicians, lawmakers and technical departments: it requires awareness, support and interest from the broader host society to be truly successful.
Recognising this need for broad-based support, the Lesotho workshop will gather local communication practitioners from local media, the private sector, government departments, think tanks and universities and civil society. By exploring techniques and approaches to communicating about mining and mining policies, both at the continental and national levels, the workshop will increase local awareness of the AMV, Lesotho’s CMV process and the potential impact of mining on development.
The roll out of these workshops is supported by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
