Climate Scientists prepare for report finish in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, 05 July 2013 (ECA) - 235 Authors and Review Editors of Working Group III’s contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report concluded their work on the final draft of the report, scheduled for completion in April 2014. During the five-day meeting, the participants discussed close to 20,000 comments from the expert and government review of the current draft and agreed on the way forward for the reports’ summary documents.

“We have been able to set the course for the further and final refinement of our report,” says Ottmar Edenhofer, Co-Chair of the Working Group III. “The authors have agreed on the agenda for the coming months, based on the assignment by the IPCC member governments to provide a comprehensive and comprehensible assessment of the knowledge about the mitigation of climate change.”

Following the review of the first order draft, the Summary for Policy makers and the more extensive Technical Summary had been conceptualized. One of the major outcomes of the Addis Ababa Meeting is the agreed outline of the next draft of the Technical Summary, accommodating aspects from all of the 16 underlying chapters. The Summary for Policy makers will further condense the information to the most policy-relevant findings for climate change mitigation. In April 2014, this text will be presented to the IPCC member governments for line-by-line approval.

“Addis Ababa was an excellent location for the last of our four Lead Author Meetings, particularly as it helps to highlight the developing country perspective for the AR5,” says Youba Sokona, Co-Chair of the Working Group III.  “We are striving to make the fifth Assessment report equally relevant for all regions of the world, regardless of their level of development,” says Sokona.
