Africa Mining Vision Compact reaches for government and private sector consensus

Addis Ababa, 26 January 2017 (ECA) – The Africa Mining Vision (AMV) Compact will be featured as a special information session during the Mining Indaba, the world’s largest mining industry conference in Cape Town, South Africa on 8 February 2017.

The Africa Mining Vision (AMV), which was adopted by the member states advocates for transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development. With that as a forefront of AMV-related activities, the Compact works to promote buy-in and participation by the private sector and other key stakeholders in Africa, at both regional and country levels. It is also based on principles that are aligned with corporate core values, policies, strategic plans and mission statements of companies in the extractive sector.

African Union Commission Trade and Industry Commissioner, Fatima Haram-Acyl, sees the AMV Compact as a tool for sustained dialogue and mutual understanding between public and private sectors.

“The transformation intended by the Africa Mining Vision required the involvement of all players in the sector and the compact is an important – and exciting – step towards even greater collaboration and co-ordination between African governments and private industry in achieving development,” says Ms. Haram-Acyl.

The special information session, “Leveraging the AMV Compact in Reaching Consensus for Shared Value and Shared Benefits,” aims to provide a platform for mutual dialogue between governments and private sector, in order to:

  • Come up with strategies for promoting  win-win solutions through shared value  and shared benefits;
  • Identify short and long term strategies to manage mining-related economic crises; and
  • Recommend ways to institutionalize the AMV Compact.

The speakers of the panel are renown leaders in the mining sector on the continent, including ministers of mines of member States, as well as representatives from chambers of mines.

The event is scheduled from 09:00 to 11:00 am at the Roof Terrace of the Cape Town International Conference Centre on 8 February 2017.
