Dakar, Senegal, May 4, 2018 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) will continue to support African countries in the implementation of Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030 for sustainable development to ensure the continent tackles the root causes of poverty and brings prosperity to its people.
This was said by Ms. Thoko Ruzvidzo, Director of the Social Development Policy Division at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), in a presentation at the fourth African Regional Forum for Sustainable Development that’s being held in Dakar, Senegal.
The 2030 Agenda is the global framework for achieving sustainable development and Agenda 2063 is Africa’s strategic framework for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Ms. Ruzvidzo said the ECA’s support for the implementation of the two agendas fell under four broad areas:
Data collection and analysis
Technical support, advisory services and capacity development
Development of knowledge products, facilitating sharing, South-South and triangular cooperation
And
Reporting and follow up support on the implementation of SDGs and Agenda 2063.
“The ECA has developed a Regional Indicator Framework for the monitoring and reporting of SDGs and Agenda 2063 to allow a coherent approach to implementation, monitoring and evaluation as well as efficient reporting on both agendas,” said Ms. Ruzvidzo.
The coordination of Africa’s input to SDGs and mapping of SDGs and Agenda 2063 is also done by the ECA under data collection and analysis, she said.
Also included is the methodological work on different SDG tiers III Indicators; the survey on the availability of economic indicators on the SDGs in Africa; promotion of open data principles and evaluation of African countries statistical systems.
The ECA, said Ms. Ruzvidzo, has also developed technical materials such as the Handbook on the Integrated Regional Indicator Framework of Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063: Concepts and Definitions to help member States implement the two agendas.
Also in the kit, she said, is the Online toolkit on Gender Statistics; selected SDG indicators in the African Statistical Yearbook.
“The ECA also provides technical support to address key issues into national plans such as land policy; modern bioenergy development; youth; harnessing the potential of urbanization; addressing the impact of migration; development of SMEs,” the ECA Director said.
The organization has also developed a toolkit to support countries better integrate Agenda 2030 and 2063 in their national planning frameworks; provides training in areas such as industrial policy formulation and gender equality.
“We also facilitate high level policy dialogues, global advocacy and capacity support on issues such as investments for the implementation of the 16 transboundary infrastructure projects; provide technical and policy oriented research and advice on matters such as climate change, blue economy, management lf natural resources,” she told participants attending the ARFSD.
ECA as a knowledge-based organization also generates knowledge in the form of studies, reports, policy briefs, policy dialogues and publications on economic, social and environmental issues, including good governance, industrialization, development planning, macro-economic policies; sectoral policies; urbanization; population dynamics; social inclusion, gender, climate change, regional integration and infrastructure.
The organisation also reports and follows-up the implementation of SDGs and Agenda 2063 by African countries through the ARFSD and the Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063 Annual Progress Report, among others.
Both the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 reflect the Common African Position on the Post-2015 Agenda (CAP) as they were informed by Africa’s development priorities and aspirations contained in the CAP.
