Africa's negative portrayal as “a risky continent in which to do business” must be tackled, Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of the UNECA, told a high-level roundtable on ‘Building Private Equity and Private Capital Markets in Africa'.

Ms Mtoba conceded there was corruption in Africa but criticised the fact that it was perceived in continental terms, as if all the countries were in the same basket.

In this interview with Staff Writer Rose Athumani, Dr. Lopes talks about Economic growth and Industrialization in Africa.

The main message to emerge, and which for the first time received strong support, was that more value should be added locally to Africa’s raw materials.

In the Ivorian capital Abidjan this week, delegates from across the continent and beyond gathered for a six-day conference themed, “Industrialization for an Emerging Africa.”

According to Mr Lopes, some of the fastest growing economies in the world are African and the continent has shown relative buoyancy in an era of economic crisis.
