ECCAS - Free Movement of Persons

In the ECCAS region, there has been little progress to implement the free movement of people as set out in the Treaty Establishing ECCAS. In 1983, ECCAS adopted the Protocol on Freedom of Movement and Rights of Establishment of Nationals of Members States. This protocol includes provisions for the freedom of movement, residence and establishment for all citizens in the ECCAS region. Implementation, according to the Protocol, were scheduled within four and twelve years respectively after the establishment of the Treaty Establishing ECCAS.

ECA and UNITAR Offer Free e-Learning Course on Industrialization through Trade

10 August 2016, Geneva, Switzerland - Africa’s social development indicators reveal a paradox: high unemployment and poverty coexisting with robust growth. Industrialization and trade are two key instruments playing a major role in economic growth performance having the potential to structurally transform Africa economies.  The goal of trade-induced industrialization must also guide the conduct, negotiations and implementation of trade and investment agreements and arrangements.

Ignoring inclusiveness may jeopardize Africa’s regional integration vision

Nairobi, 22 July 2016 (ECA)– The African Trade Policy Centre of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) this week co-organized with Third World Network Africa (TWN-Africa), a panel discussion on the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) and structural economic transformation in Africa, on the side lines of the 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

The aim of the event was to engage civil society and other stakeholders in the CFTA process, provide information and exchange views on the expected impacts of the continental trade liberalization initiative.

Economic Report on Africa 2016

Economic Report on Africa 2015

This Report examines and provides analysis on the critical elements of effectively fostering industrialization and hence structural transformation based on an extensive review of experience with industrialised countries and Africa’s post-independence attempt at industrialization. Ten country case studies were also conducted to shed light on industrializing through trade. The findings from this exercise informed the policy recommendations contained in this Report.
