Historic visit of AUC chair to ECA cements pledge to collaborate on Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030

Addis Ababa, 13 September 2017 (ECA) - The Executive Secretary of the ECA Ms. Vera Songwe received the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat as part of a longstanding commitment by both institutions to enhance collaboration and coordination in meeting Africa’s development aspirations agreed to in the AU Vision, Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030).

Vera Songwe receives credentials from new Ghanaian and Mauritanian Ambassadors

Addis Ababa, 15 September 2017 (ECA) – UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary, Ms. Vera Songwe, this week received credentials from the new Mauritania Ambassador to Ethiopia, the African Union Commission and the ECA, Sidi Ould El Ghadhy, and his Ghanaian counterpart, Ambassador William Azumah-Awinador Kanyirige, who also recently took office in Addis Ababa.

First to call on the Executive Secretary was Ambassador Sidi Ould El Ghadhy who congratulated Ms. Songwe on her appointment to head the ECA, offering his full support to her during her time in office.

Vera Songwe lauds Chad for leading terror fight & pledges ECA support on economic front

Paris, France, September 9, 2017 (ECA) - UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary, Vera Songwe, on Thursday addressed a two-day round table meeting on financing Chad's National Development Plan 2017-2021 and pledged ECA support to the north-central African country as it seeks to transform its economy and lure international investors.

Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa

Vera Songwe took up her new role as the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) on 3 August 2017.

She brings to ECA and the position of Executive Secretary a long-standing track record of providing policy advice on development and a wealth of experience in delivering development results for Africa, as well as a demonstrated strong and clear strategic vision for the continent.

ECA and Rome-based UN agencies commit to fighting food insecurity in Africa under shared framework

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, September 4, 2017 (ECA) – Economic Commission for Africa’s Executive Secretary Vera Songwe on Monday met with the principals of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and agreed to work closely with them in a number of areas, including statistics as they seek to address food insecurities on the African continent.
