Identity for development in post-COVID19 Africa

Addis Ababa, 17 June 2020 (ECA) - “COVID-19 has enabled us to explore new platforms and ways of identifying people,” said Vera Songwe, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) who suggested that digital platforms such as Facebook, Google etc could help “change the way we do censuses, identify, and locate people.”

COVID-19: Science, technology and innovation key to Africa’s recovery, says Songwe

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 15, 2020 (ECA) – Science, technology and innovation will be at the heart of Africa’s recovery from the devastating coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the continent’s ability to create sustainable jobs, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Vera Songwe, said Monday.

In remarks at the beginning of a five-day virtual COVID-19 Africa Innovation and Investment Forum 2020, Ms. Songwe said Africa needs innovations to drive homegrown solutions out of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession it has triggered the world over.

Be bold, seek answers to Africa’s challenges, Vera Songwe tells continent’s youth

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, June 9, 2020 (ECA) – The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Ms. Vera Songwe, on Tuesday urged African youth to be bold and seek solutions to some of the challenges affecting the continent.

In remarks at the end of a Virtual Youth Policy Consultation on the coronavirus and Building Back Better with Young Africans, Ms. Songwe sought to inspire and support the young leaders into action.

Strategic logistics are an important consideration in the long term planning and development of Africa’s regional transport infrastructure. Big data analysis show that seven key African corridors represent 3% of land, yet account for 20% of the population and 17% of all economic activity on the continent. These same corridors account for two-fifths of consumers, one-third of youth and of those employed, and at least one-half of those with bank accounts.
