Tunisia and Lesotho join growing number of countries to ratify AfCFTA one month to start of trading

Addis Ababa, 30 November 2020 (ECA) – One month to the commencement of trading at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, two more countries have formalized their ratification of the agreement.

Lesotho and Tunisia submitted their instruments of ratification to the African Union Commission (AUC) which is the depository of the instrument on 2 November, according to the Commissioner for Trade Albert Muchanga.

This brings the number of countries that have now submitted their instruments of ratification to 32, said Ambassador Muchanga.

Africa’s Customs chiefs commit to implementing new continental Covid-19 trade facilitation guidelines

Addis Ababa, 27 November 2020 (ECA) – Africa’s customs experts have given their support to the adoption of continental guidelines to facilitate free and timely flow of cross-border trade amid the COVID-19 pandemic ahead of the start of trading under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on 1 January 2021.

They made the pledge at a virtual meeting of Directors General of Customs on the continent organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) today, saying that the solutions must be maintained and upgraded following the crisis.

AfCFTA will increase demand for transportation infrastructure in Africa, experts say

Addis Ababa, 24 November 2020 (ECA) – Demand for transportation services in Africa will be on the increase as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement goes into operations in January next year, transport sector experts said today.

Speaking on the second day of Nigeria’s National AfCFTA strategy workshop, the experts said any country with an efficient transportation infrastructure necessary to facilitate the trading would be in the commanding position under the new era.

Nigeria’s AfCFTA Committee holds workshop aimed at creating Africa’s transportation hub

Addis Ababa, 23 November 2020, ECA – Nigeria’s National Action Committee on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) opened a three-day workshop series today that focuses on making the country the transportation hub for Africa under the trading bloc.

The objective of the series is to develop its national strategy for the transportation sector, including road, shipping, aviation and rail segments for implementing the continental agreement when it becomes operational on 1 January next year.

ECA launches ATEX, e-commerce platform that will support transactions when AfCFTA starts next year

Addis Ababa, 19 November 2020 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa presented an online trading platform Thursday, that will facilitate trading between buyers and suppliers when the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement starts next year.

Known as the African Trade Exchange (ATEX), the business-to-business e-commerce platform will not only improve cross-border trade but also provide businesses with quality products from verified African suppliers in an efficient way at reduced average trading costs based on AfCFTA rules.
