Zambia undertaking statistical reforms to address gaps in development planning, senior official says

Lusaka, Zambia, 23 October 2019 (ECA) - The Zambian government is undertaking statistical reforms to address deficits in statistical thinking and data needed to spur and sustain economic growth.

The statement was made today by the Ministry of National Development Planning and Administration Permanent Secretary Chola Chabala at the official opening of a training workshop on “Strengthening Capacities of African Governments for Integrating Accountability in Development Planning” at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.

Workshop on climate resilient reconstruction post Cyclone Idai set for Harare

African ministers agree to up their game in efforts to close identity gap on the continent

Lusaka, Zambia, October 18, 2019 (ECA) - The Fifth Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Civil Registration ended in Lusaka, Zambia, Friday with member States agreeing to scale-up efforts to address the huge identity gap that exists on the continent.

The ministers urged their governments to avail more financial resources to help them revamp and modernize the continent’s CRVS and ID managements systems to ensure they leave no one behind.

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide lack proof of legal identity, the majority of them being children who were never registered at birth.

Scribes trained in effective use of data in public health journalism at COM5

Lusaka, Zambia, October 17, 2019 (ECA) – Twenty journalists from newsrooms across Africa this week received training on effective use of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) data in public health journalism at the on-going fifth conference of African ministers responsible for CRVS.

The training was provided by the Bloomberg Data for Health Initiative and Vital Strategies, in collaboration with the Africa Programme on Accelerated Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (APAI-CRVS) team, among them the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
