Economic Report on Southern Africa 2011

This year’s Economic Report on Southern Africa builds on the recommendations of the 16th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) held in March 2010 in Lilongwe, Malawi, which considered the paper submitted by UNECASA on the impacts of the international economic and financial crises on the economies of the sub region. The ICE called for the intensification of efforts aimed at economic diversification in order to minimise the sub region’s vulnerability to external shocks and commodity price volatility.

20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts

Zambia will host the 20thsession of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) for southern Africa in March.

The ICE under the theme ‘Making natural resources work for Inclusive growth and sustainable development in Southern Africa’ will take place under the auspices of the Zambian Government from 13-14 March, 2014 in the City of Livingstone, Zambia’s tourist capital.  Eleven SADC and COMESA member States are expected to participate in the meeting which convenes yearly to discuss topical economic and social developments in the region.

About the office

The subregional office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA) is located in Lusaka (Zambia). It is headed by a Director who reports to the Executive Secretary. Its core objective is to contribute to achieving structural transformation through inclusive industrialization aimed at sustainable economic growth and reducing poverty and inequality in the subregion.

ECA hailed for commitment to improving statistics on the continent

Gaborone, Botswana, 19 February 2014 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) was repeatedly hailed for its commitment and contribution to improving statistical institutions and systems on the continent.
 
During a seminar ‘Facts and Fiction of Africa’s Statistics Narrative’ on the second day of the 5-day 9th African Symposium on Statistical Development (ASSD) in Botswana, ECA took centre stage as different discussants made reference to its commitment to statistics through consistent initiatives including the establishment of the African Centre for Statistics (
