Expert Group Meeting on Harmonization of Industrialization Strategies and Policies in Southern Africa

Considering the membership of regional member States in multiple Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the need for a coordinated approach to industrialization to tap on regional resources and value chains, there is need to review the industrialization policies and strategies in Southern Africa to identify common areas as well as divergent areas to assist member States in the process of domesticating regional commitments.

Zambian National Consultative Forum on the African Continental Free Trade Area marks start of wider Stakeholder Consultation Process

Lusaka, Zambia, 24 May 2019 - The National Consultative Forum on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) concluded on 24th May at Mulungushi Conference in Lusaka, Zambia. This marks the beginning of the wider stakeholder consultation process from 27-31 May 2019, which will feed into Zambia’s national implementation strategy for the AfCFTA.

Energy crisis in Southern Africa - Future prospects

The paper is divided into four sections, starting with the “Introduction and background”, which analyses the socioeconomic environment in all SADC countries, and ending with an assessment of the institutional structure within which the energy sector in the region operates in. From section II onwards, the focus is on the member States of SADC since they are interconnected or are in the process getting interconnected through electric infrastructure making the analysis much more comprehensible. The paper focuses on electric energy, a prominent sector for all the national economies.

SMEs to gain priority at the 25th ICE of Southern Africa to be hosted by the Kingdom of Eswatini

Livingstone, Zambia, 30 November 2018 (ECA) – The first Consultative Meeting of the Bureau of the 24th Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) of  Southern Africa met and resolved that the theme for the 25th ICE meeting would be  “Strategies and Policies for the Integration of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in the Industrialization Process in Southern Africa”. The 25th ICE will be hosted by the Kingdom of Eswatini in the first or second week of September 2019.

Adopt harmonised land policy, experts urge members States

Livingstone, Zambia, 29 November 2018 (ECA) - The two days Ad Hoc Experts Group Meeting (AEGM) on the theme "Land, Identity and Socio-Economic Transformation in Southern Africa” has ended today with experts urging Member States and development partners to adopt harmonised land policy, legal and regulatory frameworks as well as accelerate the domestication of regional and continental land policy and frameworks.
