Title
According to WHO (2013) Africa records the world’s highest road accident mortality rate; accounting for 24.1% of the numbers who die on the road, as against 18.5% in South Asia, 16.1% in the Americas and 10.3% in Europe. Its proportion of deaths of pedestrians in traffic accidents is 38% compared to 22% of the world.
It is in this context and in mid-term of the Decade of Action for Road Safety that the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through its Sub-Regional Office for Central Africa, is organising an Expert Group meeting on the situation of road safety in Central Africa. This falls in line with the Office’s 2014 - 2015 work program, with a contribution to the mid-term review of the state of implementation of the African Plan of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, outlined as a major output.
The meeting aims to:
i) Review the results of the study on the situation of road safety in Central Africa
ii) Make an inventory of the implementation of African Action Plan for the Decade for Road safety in the States of Central Africa;
iii) Spot the difficulties faced in implementing the Action Plan; and
iv) Propose concrete measures to accelerate the implementation of the plan.
