Ahead of 2013 Dakar NEPAD Financing Conference...

ECA & NEPAD plan Experts’ meeting on Africa’s infrastructure financing

ECA and NEPAD Agency are planning to convene an Experts Group Meeting in Lusaka for September 24 and 25, bringing together infrastructure and projects design/financing experts from the Regional Economic Commissions, African countries (especially members of the NEPAD Presidential Infrastructure Champion Initiative – PICI), major regional organizations and development partners, to consider key regional infrastructure projects for possible private sector financing at the upcoming November Dakar Financing Conference (DFC).
The DFC Experts Group Meeting is expected to be co-hosted by AU Commission and COMESA with the support of GIZ. The Dakar financing engagement is under the auspices of the NEPAD Chairperson, H.E. President Macky Sall of Senegal.
The regional projects to be considered are selected from the four priority sectors of the Programme on Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) – energy, transport, trans-boundary water and ICT.
The African Experts will subject the proposedprojects  to concrete parameters decided upon in July in Dakar during a planning meeting attended by NEPAD Agency, African Union Commission, ECA, GIZ, African Development Bank and the Government of Senegal.These parameters include bankability, equity, environmental soundness and gender sensitivity.
The final list of projects will be presented to the landmark DFC where African and business leaders and globally will engage on concrete financing and investment commitments to accelerate regional infrastructure.

SADC discusses coordinated internet governance

The 2nd Forum on Internet Governance in Southern Africa which took place on 6-7 August in Luanda will concretely assist in developing ICT in SADC region, according to Angola’s NEPAD secretary for telecommunications, Edmund Katiti, who said the Forum was extremely important for interchange of ideas and creation of consensus in the subregion.
"Africa needs to have a coordinated and effective voice on how internet governance will be carried out, reason why NEPAD and AU commission are active", he said.
Divided into eight panels, the Forum discussed themes such as "Principles of internet governance and cooperation reinforcement", "Access and diversity", "Internet governance for the development", "Security, opening and diversity, management of critical resources of internet and emerging problems.
The Forum was attended by telecommunication experts from Angola, Mozambique, Tanzania, DR Congo, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Namibia, Mauritius, Zambia and Lesotho.

NEPAD and GIZ mark women day with football match

The NEPAD 11 women’s team put up a spirited fight in a friendly match against GIZ United at the CSIR sports field in Pretoria.
The team, coached by Kossi Toulassi, fiercely defended its goal, in the 30 minute a-side match, which ended in a Two Nil victory to GIZ.
This is the second time the two teams have played, the first game last August 9, to mark National Women’s month. The Day commemorates the march by women in 1956 to petition against legislation that required blacks to carry the "pass", special identification documents which curtailed an African's freedom of movement during the apartheid era.
The aim of the match was to highlight the important work that GIZ and NEPAD are doing to promote women’s empowerment, a key vector to Africa’s transformation.
Director of Corporate Service Mr Bankole Adeoye lauded the good partnership between the two organizations and reiterated the important role of women in Africa’s development.  The occasion was graced by Keneilwe Mathibela former Captain of South Africa’s National women’s team) Banyana Banyana
GIZ’s Project Manager for Pan-African Institutions Silke Hansen said it was remarkable that women today could even play football. She said in Germany, women football was banned until the 1970’s.
