Side event 1: Caucus of governors of African central banks and executive directors of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank (held at the Central Bank of Nigeria): Hosted and chaired by Dr. Sarah Alade, Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, this event is one of the principal innovations in this year’s Conference. The event will discuss key issues that are relevant to the role of central banks in fostering industrialization in Africa. Opening remarks will be made by Mr. Carlos Lopes, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, and Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

Side event 2: Productivity, industrialization and competitiveness: Organized by the African Union, this event will discuss issues and challenges related to productivity, industrialization and competitiveness in Africa in the context of the global economy. The event will also examine how productivity can contribute to achieving the goals of Agenda 2063.

9 a.m. – 12 noon

Side event 3: Confronting data challenges and embracing an African data revolution for inclusive and transformative development in Africa: This event will feature the launch of a report on data for African development, which discusses challenges to statistical data production in Africa. The event will also highlight the significance of value addition and economic opportunities for Africa by visually presenting the flow of raw commodities from Africa and the subsequent importation of processed products. Panellists include Prof. Akpan Ekpo, Director General of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management, and Prof. Ayenew Ejigou, Professor of Statistics at Addis Ababa University.

Side event 4: Renewal of planning: Planning for Africa’s industrial development: This event is organized by the Economic Commission for Africa and the Ministry of Planning of Nigeria. It will be opened by Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, Minister of the National Planning Commission of Nigeria. The expected panellists include Professor Justin Lin.

Side event 5: Media round table on building media partnerships for human and social capital development towards achieving Africa’s Agenda 2063 on sustainable industrialization and economic development (Venue: Sheraton Abuja Hotel and Towers).The media round table will facilitate interaction between regional media leaders and global/regional policymakers on media partnerships for Agenda 2063 and provide a preview of the multisectoral investment and policies needed for the timely and effective take-off of the post-2015 development goals on human capital development, as required for sustainable African industrialization and economic development. Fifteenth session of the annual meeting of the Regional Coordination Mechanism for Africa (Day 1):Co-chaired by Mr. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, this meeting will provide a platform for presenting concrete outcomes and results of coordinated United Nations support for Africa’s development in partnership with African Union organizations. The expected participants include representatives of United Nations agencies supporting Africa’s development, and of the African Union and its subsidiary bodies.

Side event 6: The cost of hunger in Africa: social and economic impact of child undernutrition in Egypt, Ethiopia, Swaziland and Uganda: This event will discuss the progress and results of the Cost of Hunger in Africa study in participating countries, and will elaborate on priority areas where global, coherent and coordinated action is needed in order to eliminate stunting throughout Africa. The keynote speaker will be Ms. Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the World Food Programme.

Side event 7: Ministerial consultation hosted by Nigeria on energy in Africa: This event, organized with the support of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and chaired by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance of Nigeria, and Dr Mayaki, NEPAD, will discuss Africa’s vision on energy.

Side event 8: Greening Africa’s economies to achieve structural transformation: the role of new technologies and innovation (ministerial side event): This event will be chaired by Dr. Amoako, founder and President of the African Centre for Economic Transformation and former Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa. Keynote presentations will be made by representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Side event 9: High-level pre-conference ministerial policy round table on investing in human capital development for sustainable African industrialization and economic development (Venue: Sheraton Abuja Hotel and Towers). This round table will facilitate ministerial dialogue and preview the multisectoral investment and policies needed for timely and effective take-off of the post-2015 development goals on human capital development, as required for sustainable African industrialization and economic development. The dialogue will also feature a brief review of the investment required for a final push on the human capital development Millennium Development Goals. Organizers: Afri-Dev, GAVI, PMNCH, RBM, UNDP, ECA and AUC.

Agenda item 5: Special session: Proposed mechanism on alternative sources of financing of the African Union: This session will discuss the report of the High-Level Panel on Alternative Sources of Funding the African Union, including the mechanisms for implementing the recommendations of the report. The session will be chaired by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance of Nigeria. Finance, planning and economic development ministers are expected to be joined at this session by foreign affairs ministers. The session will be moderated by Mr. Erastus Mwencha, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and will feature interventions from Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and a foreign affairs minister on the Executive Council of the African Union.

Agenda Item 10: Launch of the Economic Report on Africa 2014:The Economic Report on Africa 2014 will be jointly launched by the Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union Commission, and will be followed by a brief discussion and a press conference. The report argues, for example, that successful industrial policy frameworks embody a dynamic and organic process that facilitates constant dialogue and strategic collaboration between different stakeholders.
