Yaoundé, October 19, 2015 (ECA) – A workshop for Francophone experts in Africa on the Africa Programme on Accelerated Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (APAI-CRVS, in English) organized by the Regional Support Group made up of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees will be held on November 2-6, 2015 at the Hotel Mont Febe in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The objective assigned to this workshop is to launch the implementation of the APAI-CRVS programme in Francophone countries to serve as a platform for sharing experiences in order to accelerate the implementation of the APAI-CRVS programme in these countries. It will thus make it possible to: (i) strengthen the capacities of experts from Francophone countries on principles and recommendations regarding civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS); (ii) validate the amendments to the APAI-CRVS guides and tools following the recommendations of the first training workshop; (iii) approve the roadmap to accelerate the implementation of the APAI-CRVS programme by conducting pre-assessment and assessment missions of the CRVS in countries; (iv) discuss the strategy for mobilizing resources to support national efforts to improve the CRVS.
This capacity strengthening for the pool of experts who will accompany their respective countries will be based on the United Nations principles and recommendations for civil registration, on presentations by participating countries and by the Regional Support Group on the progress and outlook since the meeting in Yamoussoukro in February 2015, on the guides and tools reviewed in the light of the recommendations of the first training workshop and on how to better mobilize resources to support the process of improving the CRVS.
Thus, the dicussions and relevant recommendations which will be issued after five days of reflection will make it possible to accelerate and improve the implementation of the APAI-CRVS programme in Francophone countries, most of which are lagging behind.
It should be noted that this workshop was the subject one of the recommendations of the third Conference of Ministers in charge of Civil Registration which was held in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, in February 2015, with the theme of “promote the use of civil registration and vital statistics in support of good governance in Africa”.
