Workshop to build coherence into joint programming at the sub-regional level

Addis Ababa, 28 August 2015 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa will hold a workshop on strengthening sub-regional coordination in support of the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development from 30 September 2015 to 1 October 2015 in Nazareth, Ethiopia. This will be part of a series of workshops aimed at building coordination capacity for the implementation of Africa’s transformation agenda.

The purpose of this workshop is to develop a framework for strengthening coordination capacity at the sub-regional levels and enhancing coordination among partners, including the African Union Commission (AUC), the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Agency (NEPAD), the Regional Economic Commissions (REC), International Governmental Organisations (IGOs), UN organizations and agencies in support of the African Union and its priorities including the NEPAD Programme.

The participants of the last session of the Regional Coordination Mechanism for Africa, held in March 2014, recommended that coordination capacity at the sub-regional level should be strengthened to enable the regional economic communities to support the implementation of AUC and NEPAD priority projects more effectively, especially in the context of regional integration.

ECA pointed out that until recently, regional coordination mainly focused on accounting for regional development projects carried out in collaboration with other United Nations organizations and agencies. However, what is now needed, in an era of diminishing resources, is a concerted focus on supporting sustainable capacity development and providing complete solutions to maximize impact.

The training workshop will be held over period of two days with participants from AUC, NEPAD Agency, RECs and their IGOs, the African Development Bank, SROs, UN organizations and agencies operating in Africa, and other international partners operating in Africa the first day devoted to joint programming and coordination.

Presentations and discussions are expected to identify the current global, AU and sub-regional priorities and will show ways of mapping these priorities towards outcomes with an impact.  Day two will be for the development of a results matrix and an implementation, resource mobilization and partnership framework and strategy.

Participants will be officers responsible for coordination and programming from the AUC, NEPAD Agency, RECs and their IGOs, the African Development Bank, SROs, UN organizations and agencies operating in Africa, and other international partners operating in Africa.

The workshop discussions are expected to produce a strengthened sub-regional coordination capacity. Participants will also share practical and relevant examples of how to develop joint programmes and should possess an improved awareness of the linkages between the sub-regional, regional, and global priorities after the workshop.
