ECA praised for developing unique social index

Yaounde, 25 June 2015 (ECA) – Following the rolling out exercise for Central and Francophone East Africa of the newly developed African Social Development Index (ASDI) experts of National Statistics Offices and officials from planning ministries of both sub-regions, have expressed their enthusiasm to work hand-in glove with ECA to make it a veritable tool for boosting social policies for Africa's transformation. The exercise was jointly carried out in Douala, Cameroon from 16 to 18 June 2015 by the Social Development Policy Division and the Sub-regional Office for Central Africa of the Commission.

During the workshop, officials from regional organizations, notably CEMAC, CEPGL, CIRGL, ECCAS and IGAD as well as representatives of UN agencies, appreciated the uniqueness of the tool in highlighting inequalities within countries for better social policy planning and affirmed their willingness to work with ECA to consolidate the tool.
