Niamey, 29 April 2014 (ECA) - The Economic Commission for Africa is embarking on a plan to re-establish cooperation with the West African Economic Monetary Union (WAEMU), following a memorandum of understanding signed between the two entities in 2013.
“We will be embarking on a working visit in May to WAEMU Headquarters in Ouagadougou to revive this relationship following a few years of decline in organizing joint activities with the ECA; and we are pleased with the prospects of working closely to harmonize our programmes,” said Dimitri Sanga, Director of the ECA Subregional Office for West Africa.
The ECA delegation will meet with the WAEMU Commissioners; as well as the specialized units and departments. They will also visit the statistical center before being received by the President of the WAEMU Commission, Cheik Hadjibou Soumaré.
It was as a result of the cooperation agreement with the ECA that the region was able to finalize, in June 2013, a consultation framework for West African Inter-Governmental Organizations. In addition, it facilitated the buying in of the setting up of the Subregional Coordination Mechanism (SRCM) of the agencies of the United Nations System in November 2013 in Dakar.
Since its creation in 1994, the West African Monetary Union has implemented programmes and initiatives that have accelerated the integration process in the subregion.
