Experts to deliberate on new approaches to development planning
Dakar, 1 February 2018 (IDEP) – Within the framework of the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) development seminar series, a high level round table dialogue on “New approaches to planning for a better achievement of the objectives of agendas 2030 and 2063” has been scheduled for 6 February 2018 at the Institute’s Headquarters in Dakar (Senegal).
Agendas 2030 and 2063 highlighted the need for integrating environmental, social and economic dimensions and acknowledged their interlinkages for sustainable development. The sustainable development challenges are thus quite complex and their systemic nature calls for holistic and integrated methods. Therefore, many of the approaches and tools used by most African countries, namely the sector based or mixed economy ones, are not always fully adapted. African countries must then establish sustainable development planning that will surpass the recent proven practices under Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and accelerated growth strategies documents. Furthermore, these new planning systems and approaches must meet the requirements of synergy, alignment, consistency, efficiency in order to achieve the objectives of the 2030 and 2063 agendas.
Ms. Karima Bounemra Ben Soltane, Director of IDEP, explains that the achievement of the agendas 2030 and 2063 objectives will largely depend on the capacity of planners to design, fund, implement and monitor development plans through new approaches. Indeed, it is worth noting that the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has developed a tool to help member states align national development plans with 2030 and 2063 agendas for the purpose of consistent and integrated implementation. The ECA’s Macreconomic Policy Division, through its Renewal of Planning section will participate in this High level round table.
Ms. Ben Soltane is particularly pleased with the participation of high level experts in development planning and capacity enhancement drawn from governmental and international organisations, notably the Directorate General of Planning and Economic Policy of Senegal, UNDP, African Futures Institute, WTO Chairs Unit-Institute of Training and Technical Cooperation, the Directorate of Planning and Development Policy of Togo, The High Commission for Planning of Morocco, The Directorate of Macroeconomic Planning and International Cooperation of Kenya, Zimbabwe’s Economic Research and Policy Analysis Unit (ZEPARU), the Centre for Studies and Research on Economic Analysis and Policy (CERAPE) of Congo . Cameroun, Djibouti, Tunisia and Nigeria will also be represented.
This event is held on the eve of the IDEP Technical Advisory Committee meeting.
