Dakar, 7th July 2017 (IDEP)– Within the framework of the African Institute for economic development and planning (IDEP) development seminars series, a high level round table dialogue on « Gender and climate change in Africa » will gather decision makers, officials and experts from African countries and international organisations, feminist organisations, as well as experts from private sector or independent, people from academia and researchers working on issues related to consideration of the gender dimension in sustainable development policies on the continent. The event will take place at IDEP headquarter in Dakar (Senegal), on the 7th of July 2017.
The consideration of the gender dimension in climate policies requires taking responsibility of the environmental, social and economic dimensions. According to the World meteorological organisation (WMO), African communities are facing several climatic constraints without strong resilience capacities. Thus, there is a need to put in place adaptation and mitigation strategies in order to address climate change and improve living conditions for women and children by 2020.
The World health organisation (WHO) considers that women, children, elderly persons and people with disabilities are particularly affected by impacts of climate change. Through its role in the social responses to climate change as well as after meteorological disasters, the woman is not only a mother but she also undertakes household chores.
This event, very important for Africa’s development and structural transformation, will contribute to the reflection on climate change adaptation and mitigation programmes for women and youth towards better economic and social resilience in Africa.
