Addis-Ababa, 23 March 2016 (ECA) – The Economic Commission for Africa will hold a high-level dialogue on: “After Paris: Implications for Green Growth in Africa” on 2 April 2016 in Addis-Ababa (Ethiopia), on the margins of the African Development Week 2016.
This event aims to evaluate the impact of the Paris agreement (COP 21) on the African development agenda and consider financing options for innovative and green investments. Panel members will discuss opportunities to step up ambitions for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, to preserve Africa from global warming as much as possible. This event is aimed at decision makers, planners, academics as well as civil society and private sector representatives.
Organized in late 2015, the Paris Conference was an opportunity for global decision makers to acknowledge the reality of climate change and its impact on developing countries. Following this event, 195 countries had agreed on the need to keep global warming at 2° Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures as well as on the actions and investments needed for a sustainable, low carbon future.
Global temperatures have increased by 1° Celsius above preindustrial temperatures, with a significant impact on African countries, which are already witnessing an increase in disasters related to climate change. Despite their difficulties, African countries have they have expressed their willingness to aim for greener development model and are currently looking for the means to make this investment a reality.
