An average of 7,000 mining industry professionals from more than 100 countries and 2,300 companies are expected to attend the event with the intent to establish vital relationships to sustain their investment interests. More than 45 African and non-African government delegations are also expected.
AMDC’s role in Mining Indaba, through a number of events and engagements with governments and private sector leaders, is to promote wide understanding among stakeholders on the added value and vital relevance of Africa Mining Vision.
AMDC is hosting a number of sessions at Mining Indaba:
- AMV Day and Ministerial Symposium Panel on Transparency and Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs)
- Special Information Session on Linkages
- Special Information Session on AMV Compact
- Exhibition Booth
Session on IFFs
The AMV Day and Ministerial panel session will review the impact of illicit financial outflows on domestic resource mobilization from the mineral sector and its implication for achieving the sustainable development goals. It will specifically examine gaps in design and implementation of key instruments used in mineral-rich countries to mobilize domestic revenues. It will explore opportunities for partnerships between African governments and mining companies to curb leakages along the mineral value chain.
Special Information Session on AMV Compact
AMDC’s special panel session in Mining Indaba titled, “Leveraging the AMV Compact in Reaching Consensus for Shared Value and Shared Benefits,” will facilitate an open dialogue based on the principles of the AMV Compact between Governments and the Private Sector. The discussion will come up with consensus for a win-win solution through shared value and shared benefits; identify short- and long-term strategies to help position Governments and the Private Sector for the next super cycle; and list recommendations to improve the institutionalization of the African Mining Vision Compact.
Special Information Session on Linkages
The session on “Value Creation and Local Development: Linkages, investment and diversification in African Mining” will discuss concrete opportunities in value creation, with a particular focus on linkages and diversification, including through suppliers development programmes. The Event will draw, in particular, on the current CMV process in Ghana and on the lessons that can be drawn from successful cases elsewhere in Africa, and beyond.

Background
Africa Mining Vision
The Africa Mining Vision (AMV) was adopted in February 2009 by the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government as the key continental framework to promote mineral resource-based development and structural transformation on the continent. It seeks to foster a “transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development.”
The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) is mandated to support and accompany African countries in adopting a holistic and comprehensive approach in that regard, notably through the Country Mining Vision. Since its creation in 2013, it has supported a number of countries in designing and in implementing concrete and practical AMV-compatible reforms. These are substantiated by in-depth geostrategic, economic and political economy analysis and through policy advice and institutional facilitation. To achieve this objective, the AMDC is working with a range of stakeholders, including from governments, industries, think tanks and development partners.
