Tuesday, September 18, 2018 to Friday, September 21, 2018
Pointe aux Piments, Mauritius

Interested in “Blue Economy, Inclusive Industrialization and Economic Development in Southern Africa”?  The ECA Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa will be convening the 24thSession of the Inter-Governmental Committee of Experts (Senior Officials of Government) (ICE) meeting of Southern Africa on the above theme from 18 -21 September 2018 in Pointe aux Piments, Mauritius.

The meeting will focus on how the blue economy sector can be a new and major frontier of economic development in Southern Africa by facilitating production, investments, job creation and the reduction of poverty and inequality in the region. Southern Africa’s ocean resources remain largely untapped and under-utilized for the development of the region. The meeting will also engage on how land-linked and land-locked countries can be part of, and benefit from the value chain of production in the blue economy sector.

Deliberations during the 24th ICE will include an Ad-hoc Expert Group meeting (AEGM) on the theme: The Role of Small and Medium Scale (SME) Enterprises in the Industrialization Process in Southern Africa” being co-organized with the SADC Secretariat, which will take place from 20-21 September 2018.

The ICE is a UN statutory annual meeting which brings together senior officials of governments- mostly permanent secretaries and other stakeholders from Southern Africa and the continent to discuss current and pressing issues affecting socio-economic development in the region. Past ICE meetings have attracted high-level participation from a wide pool of stakeholders from member States, private sector, academia, international and regional development partners, civil society and the United Nations system.

Both the ICE and AEGM, provide a forum for exchanging ideas and sharing lessons from a diverse pool of expertise and experiences through round-tables, presentations and open discussions.

As such, we extend our invitation to interested organizations and individual experts to be part of the above meeting. ECA will not be able to cover travel, accommodation and other related expenses for self-interested participants, but will facilitate travel by providing invitation letters for visa applications and information on accommodation in Pointe aux Piments, Mauritius.
