Title
The High-Level Panel on Migration in Africa (HLPM), will hold its fourth meeting from 16-17 October 2018 at the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Chaired by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia, the mandate of the Panel is to mobilize political will at the highest level and provide overall guidance and support to regional and global policy dialogues on international migration from an African perspective.
The meeting will review a draft report prepared by technical experts to the Panel, as well as related knowledge products and advocacy materials that will form the basis for continued engagement with African member states and other stakeholders. Expected outputs of the meeting include:
- Endorsing the final text of the HLPM report, which will synthesize the key evidence and policy responses to current and future migration trends to inform policy making on human mobility and operational interventions in Africa and beyond.
- Finalizing key messages to be forwarded to the African Union Summit in January 2019, with a focus on specific actions needed at the national level to drive leaders to take action.
- Discussing strategies for building effective partnerships for the implementation and follow-up of the Global Compact on Migration. enhance free movement on the continent, in the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) and AU Protocol on Free Movement of Persons.
- Planning for a HLPM side event to take place during the launch of the Global Compact for Migration in in Marrakech, Morocco, in November 2018.
