Yaounde, Cameroon

In close collaboration with Partnership Africa Canada (PAC), Collectif des ONG pour la Sécurité Alimentaire et le Développement du Cameroun organized APRM peer learning and sensitization workshop in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 21 to 23 April 2009.

ECA as one of the strategic partners to the APRM process participated in the workshop by sending two staff as technical resource persons, namely Mr. Kojo Busia, Chief of APRM Unit and Mr. David Kamara, Civil Society Section from Governance and Public Administration Division. Their participation was in presenting two papers on “The Impact of APRM on the challenges of good governance” and on “The Role of CSOs in the APRM Process.

The workshop brought together about 70 participants: government representatives, members of civil society organizations, private sectors, the national parliament and other stakeholders and discussed the APRM process and their effective role towards the implementation of APRM in Cameroon. The workshop also facilitated a dialogue among participants to enhance their participation to the national structures in charge of supervising the evaluation process.

Participants at the workshop were extremely appreciative to the UNECA for providing such an invaluable opportunity for learning and exchange of ideas about the APRM process and the state of governance in Cameroon in general. Participants expressed their views in pointing out the necessary tools and empowerment they gained from the workshop that would enable them in the future to make a meaningful contribution to the APRM process in Cameroon.

Of the 29 acceding member countries, Cameroon is the one that joined the process in April 2003. An advance mission to Cameroon was conducted in June 2008, led by Mme Graca Machel.
