The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat of the Ministry of Devolution & Planning of Kenya have partnered to organize a two day APRM regional sensitization workshop for East Africa from 2-3 December 2015, in Mombasa, Kenya.

The overarching objective of the workshop is that of enhancing performance by harnessing existing capabilities at an individual and institutional level, as well as forging stronger partnerships through experience sharing and skills transfer.  In particular, the purpose of the workshop is to train country offices and to engage in deeper analysis, understand, identify and recommend appropriate measures to address capacity-related problems in the implementation of the APRM process in an effort to spur development and promote good governance. The workshop will also be geared towards enhancing the capacity of member states that have recently acceded to the APRM as well as sensitizing non APRM countries to accede to the mechanism.

National Focal Points, members of National Governing Councils as well as the National APRM Secretariat from Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda will participate to the workshop. In addition, representatives of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), such as IGAD, EAC and COMESA will also attend the  workshop. The workshop will be facilitated by the Capacity Development Division of UNECA, the APRM Continental Secretariat, the NEPAD Agency as well as experts from APRM countries.

The expected outcomes are: to increase knowledge on how to implement the APRM process on the national and regional levels; improve the knowledge on the harmonisation of the APRM National Programme of Actions (NPoAs) into existing development plans; increase interaction between the APRM oversight units, NGOs, local authorities and local civil society; enhance awareness over the APRM process among civil society and public sector actors and also create a dialogue among national offices of APRM member states in the region.
