The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has led to a severe human and economic crisis. Indeed, as of 21 May 2020, the number of global cases was estimated at 5,047,377 with a death toll of 329,816. Africa has registered 96,829 cases and 3,031 deaths[1] (Johns Hopkins University Global COVID-19 tracker).

African countries may have registered less cases so far, compared to the rest of the world; however, because of its structural development challenges and already over-stretched institutions, the continent is likely to be more affected by the human, social and economic impacts of the pandemic. Furthermore, COVID-19 may hit hardest, the vulnerable and marginalised segments of the population, including women and the youth.
