Expert Group Meeting : Understanding the potential of Blockchain technology in Africa

Blockchain technology is revolutionary in the sense that it allows parties to transact directly with each other without the need for third party intermediaries as central trusted counter-parties, as this comfort is provided by way of the mutual consensus of members. Today  its exploitation goes much further and extends to many sector   ranging from finances , healthcare, chemical processes, mineral processing, energy distribution, environmental protection, Internet of things, etc. In this context, the New Technology and Innovation Section as part of its policy research activities aims to explore new trends in new and emerging technologies to provide African policy and decision-makers with policy advice towards harnessing new technologies and innovation to transform its economic and social development. It is in this context that ECA, is organizing an expert group meeting on “Understanding the potential of blockchain technology in Africa” to explore the potential of blockchain technology in Africa from 21 to 22November   2017 in   Addis-Ababa.  The general objective of the meeting is to assess the broad concepts, knowledge and practices of blockchain technologies in the context of their application in Africa through the provision of use case studies in the continent and provide policy orientation for consideration by African policy and decision-makers.
