Background:
Africa has the largest concentration of young people in the world. The continent’s youth is expected to constitute over 830 million of its anticipated general population of 2.5 billion by 2050. Population growth has an enormous effect on urban planning. Therefore, the processes of urbanization and population growth, and the potential and risks embedded therein, present invaluable opportunities and challenges for Africa to realize the demographic dividend its policy makers hope for - unlocking structural transformation for the entire continent.
Objective:
The overall objective of the EGM is to engage decision makers in Africa on strategies to implement the New Urban Agenda and reap Africa’s demographic dividend. The EGM will discuss the interlinkage of the growing youth segment of Africa’s population and its impact on sustainable urbanisation, especially in light of the opportunities and challenges of implementing the New Urban Agenda in Africa.
