An agreement to launch the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was signed in Kigali on Wednesday, thus creating the largest free trade area on the world's poorest inhabited continent.

Africa has often been described as the last frontier for growth. According to estimates by the United Nations, about 2.2 billion people will be added to the global population by the year 2050 and more than half of that growth will occur in the African continent.

The index however notes that many countries still fail to build on prior progress. Most women in Africa are still not strategically positioned to benefit from trade. Three women in the trade space have shared their thoughts on this. They all agree that women make a major contribution to trade in most African countries through their involvement in the production of tradable goods, but a lot more still can be done.
