Executive Secretary Meets African Ambassadors for Second Quarterly Briefing

 

Addis Ababa, 13 March 2013 (ECA ) - The Executive Secretary of ECA, Mr. Carlos Lopes, held his second quarterly briefing with African ambassadors to exchange views on the work of the Commission. The meetings continue to be a sounding board on how ECA is responding to the interests and demands of its member states.

Mr. Lopes briefed the ambassadors on activities and achievements of the ECA during the past quarter, including an update on the ECA reform process, knowledge products generated, consensus building efforts and technical assistance provided to member states and RECs. Among the activities previewed for the next quarter were: the upcoming 6th joint AUC-ECA meetings of the conference of African ministers of finance, planning and economic development (March 2013 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire); retreat for African ambassadors/permanent representatives to the UN on ‘the Transformative Agenda for Africa’ (April 2013 in New York, USA); private equity financing side-event during the next WEF-Africa conference (May 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa); and the 50th anniversary celebrations of the OAU/AU (May 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).

The ambassadors welcomed Mr. Lopes’ efforts to keep them regularly updated on issues of major importance. They reaffirmed their support for the ECA’s new strategic orientation and acknowledged efforts to implement the dual language policy (French and English) for all ECA official papers.

The next quarterly briefing is scheduled for June 2013.
