Fiscal policy for financing sustainable development in Africa

Addis Ababa, 04 December 2018 (ECA) – On 10 and 11 December 2018, the Macroeconomic Policy Division of the Economic Commission for Africa will convene an external peer review meeting to review a draft of the 2019 edition of the Economic Report on Africa, on the theme “Fiscal policy for financing sustainable development in Africa”.

Given that African countries have endorsed the Sustainable Development Goals contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, the 2019 edition of the Economic Report on Africa is therefore dedicated to supporting African Member States in examining the fiscal reforms and approaches needed for Africa to achieve the aspiration of these two agendas.

The Economic Report on Africa 2019 has therefore been prepared to enable policymakers in African Member States to examine their domestic resources and funding needs for implementing programmes to implement both the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063, identify their resource gaps and reform/gear their fiscal policies to mobilize additional resources to enable them to bridge those gaps.

The Economic Report on Africa 2019 has been written drawing on country case studies (i.e., Angola, Benin, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, the Sudan and Zimbabwe), the experiences of which have helped to present the findings resulting from interaction with various experts and to inform the recommendations contained in the Report.

The objective of this external peer review meeting, which brings together prominent experts from within and outside the continent, is to carefully review the draft Economic Report on Africa 2019, discuss its findings and guide the formulation of relevant policy messages and recommendations for African countries so that they can mobilize resources to meet their commitments to implementing the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.
